Although AI is advancing faster than expected, most nations have not considered how AI will affect children's social and emotional well-being.

Children's interaction with AI
From smart speakers to educational games, children are increasingly exposed to AI. These devices not only provide entertainment but also educational and developmental opportunities. However, this early interaction with AI technology brings with it a number of concerns that deserve attention.

Emerging concerns about AI and children
Although much more research is needed, early studies on AI and children point to several concerns:

Sharing of personal information: Young children may share personal information with AI platforms. Studies show that children often engage in conversations with smart speakers, telling personal stories and revealing details that adults might consider private. One study found that children between the ages of 3 and 6 believed smart speakers had thoughts, feelings, and social skills. Only a few children assumed the speakers were actually human beings. Another study found that young children thought smart speakers were more trustworthy than humans when it came to answering fact-based questions, such as "Who was the first US president to drive a car?" Use of AI by teenagers
Many teens use AI daily. Teens are big fans of generative AI, which helps them write essays and reports and create images and videos to share on social media (among hundreds of other possible uses). However, only 1 in 4 parents whose teens use AI are aware that they are doing so, a recent survey found. This lack of awareness on the part of parents can limit their ability to guide and supervise their children's appropriate use of AI.
